Why Copying Others Won’t Make You Successful in Web3

Many new Web3 projects fall into the copycat trap: chasing whatever protocol or token has been popular and replicating it. But success won’t come from simply cloning someone else’s idea. Copying a hot DeFi app or NFT project might “work” for a moment, but it usually creates “poorly implemented products … with no real vision,” leading to user fatigue. Instead, find what makes your project unique.

Great founders have the confidence to “carve their own path from first principles rather than going with the flow,” even if it means swimming against the current. n other words, use trends as inspiration but always adapt them to your own goals and community, don’t just recycle another team’s model.

Mentorship: Guidance, Not a Recipe. Mentors are key, but don’t treat their advice like a plug-and-play solution. Learn principles, test them in your context, and adapt. Copying someone else’s playbook rarely works — take inspiration, not instructions.

Make Decisions by Testing, Not Imitation

Ship fast, gather real feedback, iterate. Early-stage projects shouldn’t wait for perfection or mimic another roadmap. Real learning comes from user input and quick experiments.

Position Your Project Around Its Own Value

Stand out with a clear, unique value proposition. Focus on the problem you solve and how you do it differently. Avoid generic messaging — communicate your strengths and vision.

Authentic Community-Building

You can’t clone a community. Listen first, provide value, and celebrate contributions. Encourage collaboration and show authenticity — hype alone won’t build loyalty.

Key Takeaways

  • Be original: adapt trends, don’t copy them.

  • Learn from mentors, but filter advice through your own context.

  • Ship fast, iterate with real feedback.

  • Build community authentically, don’t chase vanity metrics.

  • Highlight your unique value, avoid generic messaging.

Copying others might feel safe, but in Web3 it rarely works. Focus on your context, your vision, and your community, that’s what people actually care about.

That’s a good one, Cris, a lot of projects; memes, dexes, etc., were built from just a copy and paste strategy. This strategy is however, sustainable. Hence, these projects lose value over time.

In Web3, copying might win short-term hype, but only originality, fast iteration, and authentic community-building create lasting value.

Spot on @CrisMetis  In Web3, the projects that create their own value not just copy others are the ones that last. Trends can inspire, but the real difference comes from an authentic vision the community can actually feel.

Memes are a great example of why simple copy-paste strategies don’t work. Beyond the initial hype, if there’s no real community or belief around them, they quickly fade away. With DEXes it’s slightly different, but the main issue is that there are already thousands out there all fighting over the small piece of the pie left by the big players, most of them without bringing any real innovation.

That’s the key: take inspiration, but never just copy and paste. It might bring short-term attention, but without originality and substance it won’t hold up in the long run.

Derivatives never last long except they’re offering something very significant than the originally which is rarely the case most times

Exactly, it’s rare but if they are able to deliver and improve more than just copy and paste, it could still have some value.
