Rise of the 'intern voice'

Something I’ve noticed on crypto Twitter over the past few years has been the rise of the “intern voice”. A looser, more casual style of posting that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Sometimes it’s a dedicated side account, sometimes it’s just how the team tweets from the main handle. Either way, it gives projects a bit more freedom to test tone, drop a meme, or take a swing that might not land. The stakes feel lower, and that’s part of the appeal.

Pros of the intern voice:

  • Makes the brand feel more human and approachable

  • Opens the door for humor, personality, and fast reactions

  • Creates a more forgiving space to experiment with content

Cons of the intern voice:

  • When jokes flop, they still reflect on the project

  • Can confuse new followers if tone swings too far

  • Blurs the line between official voice and personal voice

It raises some good questions for marketing teams and founders:

Where’s the line between casual and off-brand? And how much is failing publicly actually part of finding your voice?

Would love to hear how others are thinking about this.

Have you tried a looser side account? Did it work? Did it backfire?
