Google Steps Into AI + Crypto Payments

:fire: Big Players Are Moving In

Google has launched an open-source AI payments protocol with Coinbase, the Ethereum Foundation, and 60+ partners. It supports both credit cards and stablecoins, bridging traditional finance with crypto.

What this shows

  • The largest tech and crypto players are now pushing AI + crypto adoption into the mainstream.

  • Stablecoins are being positioned as a core part of payments, which strengthens the case for scalable L2s.

  • When adoption comes from the top, the demand for decentralized, community-driven infrastructure like Metis grows even stronger.

For us to think about

  • How should Metis respond when Big Tech begins driving the narrative?

  • Is this a chance for Metis to stand out as the decentralized alternative in the middle of mainstream adoption?

  • Could this open doors for Metis builders to plug into global-scale payment rails?

When big tech steps in, it validates the space but also makes decentralization even more important.

This could be a real chance for Metis to position itself as the king alternative that provides decentralization and a community-first alternative that plugs into those global rails.

As the first L2 to decentralize our sequencer, we are well positioned for this

As a “DC of Process”…

community-first alternative

I believe Metis Foundation will support the community in creating an alternative.
There are so many ideas, and as we can see, not as many “value creators” on one hand and the general population apathy (my personal perspective) - I see requests for decentralization only when somebody gets affected by the lack of it, not because it is “our nature”.

Apple, Google, Meta, X, Microsoft, are centralized? EVERYBODY knows it. Did the general population really care about/ignore their products because of that? What phone do you use? Apple? Google? Xiaomi?

Same for the crypto-world
Metamask users? Ledger?

Can Metis Foundation support such initiatives? ABSOLUTELY!
Will the Metis Foundation do it just to “become a leader”? I doubt it. Only if there is a sound business case.

So, if members of our community care about it, are willing to act on it, and carry it forward, the Metis Foundation will no doubt help.
